CMS Updates 11/1/19

Annual Updates

Despite multiple reminders, there are still 70 sixth-grade families and 78 seventh-grade families who have not completed the Infinite Campus annual update.  Students CANNOT attend a field trip without this being completed. Just before 4th and 5th grade field trips we spent a significant amount of time making personal contact with families who had not completed this process - please do your part and save our staff this time and get these updates done!  Just a reminder, you cannot use the App. to complete the update. Click HERE for directions.

Zones of Regulation

The 4th-grade students have just finished a 3-week lesson series about the Zones of Regulation taught by Mrs. Hillman, the 4th-grade school counselor. In addition, Mrs. Collins, 5th-grade counselor, has held “Zones Refresher Classes” with all of the 5th-grade students.

The Zones is a systematic, cognitive-behavioral approach used to teach self-regulation by categorizing all the different ways we feel and states of alertness we experience into four concrete colored zones (blue, green, yellow and red).  The Zones framework provides strategies to teach students to become more aware of and independent in controlling their emotions and impulses, manage their sensory needs, and improve their ability to problem solve conflicts. If you'd like to learn more about the Zones of Regulation, click HERE

The 4th and 5th grade teachers, school counselor, and admin will reference the Zones of Regulation regularly throughout the school year in large and small group settings and well as in individual meetings. In addition, the school counselors will introduce students to new coping skills each week through Technique of the Week videos. While these lessons are taught in the school, in order for students to have the most success utilizing coping skills to help their self-regulation, it is important to talk about, review and practice coping skills at home as well. We encourage you to ask your students about the new techniques they are learning in school and to demonstrate how they work.

CMS Yearbooks

Just a reminder that CMS yearbooks are on sale through December.  We do not order extra yearbooks, so all sales must be completed before winter break.  To order a yearbook, please log-in to Infinite Campus and add yearbook as an optional fee to your child’s school fee account.

To order your yearbook, log-in to Infinite Campus.  On the left-hand side of the screen click fees. Then click on the “manage accounts” folder (this is the tab next to the shopping cart).  From there you will click “optional payments.” You should be able to add “CMS Yearbook” to your cart and pay the fee. Please contact the main office with questions on this ordering process!

4th and 5th Grade CogAT Testing

On Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of next week students in grades 4 and 5 will be completing CogAT testing during the school day.  Please help your students get a good night’s rest, and encourage them to not stress, but try their best, on these assessments.

CMS Outdoor Recess Procedures

Per the Parent - Student Handbook, CMS will monitor the weather and outdoor conditions to ensure the safety of all students.  We will plan on having outdoor recess unless the temperature falls below a real feel of 20 degrees, and/or unsafe conditions (standing water, mud, snow, etc.) are present.  Please note that we make this decision at 10:10am. Students should plan to dress accordingly, which probably doesn’t include shorts (despite what 7th grade boys will tell us!)  We encourage all students to wear hats, gloves, boots, even snow pants if they’d like! We ask that parents label ALL individual items of clothing and boots!  Student boots can be left on the floor outside of their lockers.

Parking Lot Reminders

  • All morning car traffic is to use Memorial Dr. by the high school - there is to be no car traffic in the Board of Education lot in the morning.  Our buses are coming and going at different times, and are not expecting car traffic in this area. Given the tight turns, and limited visibility of a full parking lot, it is a huge safety issue to mix car and bus traffic during this time.  Parents needing to conduct business in the main office are asked to park in the visitor parking spaces and walk your child across the parking lot. Students being dropped-off without a parental escort will be directed to use the sidewalk and walk around the building to enter the south doors.  In addition, parents should follow the one-way traffic pattern established for the buses if using the Board of Education parking lot.

  • The doors open at 7:40AM each morning.  We have already noticed a significant increase in traffic on the few bad weather days we have had.  As we begin to transition to the winter months, please leave plenty of time for your child to arrive to school and be in their classroom by 8:00AM.  Remember, Latchkey is available daily beginning at 6:15, and all buses have been arriving regularly to CMS by 7:53!

  • 4th grade parents: PLEASE DO NOT ENTER A LINE OF BUS TRAFFIC WHEN THEY ARE LEAVING in the afternoons.  Once those buses start to leave in the afternoon, we ask that all cars stop and let the buses exit the parking lot quickly and efficiently.

Energy Kits

So far, Chardon Middle School has reached 260 Energy Efficiency Kit requests from CMS families.  Remember to request your Energy Efficiency Kits and credit our school by going online to with promo code FEOH1920, or calling 1-855-343-6600.  Families will receive a free box of light bulbs, night lights, etc. AND, the school with the most kit requests this year will win $1,250, so let's all be Student Energy Savers!

7th Grade Chicago Trip

Initial payments were due today, 11/1/19.  Please be sure to log-in to Infinite Campus and select the first Chicago payment due today - we have begun a waiting list so initial deposits, or a payment plan set-up with Mr. Velotta, are required in order to secure your child’s spot.

Chardon Spirit Wear

Beginning this Monday, and every Monday and Thursday during students’ lunch periods, PTO will be selling Topper Spirit Apparel!  Check out pictures of available items on the PTO Facebook page to see what will be available! Cash or checks made out to CMS PTO will be accepted. In addition, early next week (week of 11/4) students will be bringing home a paper order form with additional sizes available.

See Something Say Something!

It takes all of us to maintain the safety and security of our schools.  If you see something, say something. Please never hesitate to contact the CMS Main Office to report a concern.  If after hours, the best way to report concerns and connect to the administration is to utilize our safe schools reporting procedures.  You can easily and confidentially report any issue that affects education or safety, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Conference Scheduling

We have one night of fall conferences left - Wednesday, 11/6.  Teachers will hold individual conferences with interested parents, discussing their specific classes.  Parents are welcome to sign-up for conferences with any or all of your child’s teachers. If you have already met with or have established lines of communication with your child’s teachers, a parent may decide that this conference is not necessary at this time.  Please know that we are happy to meet with parents at any time.

This year, all CLSD schools are using an on-line scheduling program, PTC Fast, to schedule conferences.  (Same program CHS has used for years, and 2nd year at CMS). Please click HERE to establish your account and to finalize the date and time of your meeting.  When you arrive the day of conferences there will be a list by each entrance to help you find the teachers’ assigned meeting locations.
