Chardon Elementary, Middle School and High School students will benefit from $21,036 in grants awarded this Spring by Chardon Schools Foundation. The Foundation is immensely grateful for the community's outpouring of support – both from donors and bidders – at the March 10th auction. This collective generosity enabled the Foundation to provide the following grants for 2018-2019 and beyond.
At the elementary level, a startup donation has been made by the Foundation towards a district-wide Reading Summit that will celebrate the talents of the district's young readers and writers.
Middle school students will have the opportunity to use critical thinking and team-building skills as they participate in Breakout EDU, an enriching classroom version of the trending escape rooms. Technology students at the middle school will benefit from the return of Internet safety guru Jesse Weinberger.
In the study of science, 5th grade classes will engage in an Owl Pellet Lab project to learn about food chains, prey and predator relationships, and healthy ecosystems; and Jackie Brown's 5th grade classroom will be equipped with a Window to the Outdoors system that records and displays live nature events.
Additionally, the extracurricular Book/Movie Club will be a new and fun opportunity offered to 5th through 7th graders.
High school art students enrolled in the newly established Digital and Metal Arts programs will have access to such new equipment as a vinyl cutter, scanner, and wireless printer to enable skill building and promote career and entrepreneurship readiness. Also at the high school, Spanish 1-3 and French 3 students will experience Google Expedition teacher-guided, virtual reality cultural field trips.
And Chardon's Academic Decathlon team can look forward to new study materials, practice tests, and pre-paid competition participation fees as the team delves into the 2018-2019 targeted curriculum, The 1960s: A Transformational Decade.
As the Foundation gears up for the Fall 2018 grant requests, they are planning their annual Firecracker 5K Race for Education & 1-Mile Fun Run/Walk being held this year on Wednesday July 4th.
