Topper Talk Blog

Welcome to Topper Talk, our “rumor control” blog, where school officials will answer questions and concerns that are circulating outside school walls. "We consider this blog  an opportunity for the community to have an open door to the schools," said Ellen Ondrey, District Communications Coordinator.

Schools typically use websites and newsletters to share information. But other Internet-based tools, such as texting, Facebook and Twitter, have made it easier for misinformation to quickly spread before school officials can respond.

"It's that immediacy of the technology now," said Ondrey "With personal blogs, Facebook, and online comments to news articles, people have the opportunity to say whatever they want. That makes it challenging for us to ensure an accurate story is being told. Because of this, we've created an online forum as a central location where parents and community members can get answers."

School officials will review each entry before posting questions and answers. The district will respond to the questions it can. Districts are legally prohibited from discussing personnel issues or student-sensitive cases.

Question or Comment:
How will the waiver being filed by the State of Ohio in February, 2012, to the No Child Left Behind affect the Chardon Schools?

Answer:
Ohio’s Waiver request to the U.S. Department of Education focuses on four areas:
-A redesign of the accountability (testing) system
-Consolidation of plans for and use of certain federal dollars
-More flexibility for low-performing schools to improve student achievement, and
-Greater district control over spending on tutoring for disadvantaged students.

To make those changes, Ohio will need to provide a plan to focus on “college and career” readiness and to improve how teachers and principals are evaluated. Ohio is already moving in that direction by piloting a new teacher evaluation system in many school districts this year. Our priority, as always,  is to boost student performance levels, and we believe the waiver will provide Chardon Schools greater flexibility in how we obtain our results.

Question or Comment:
Why do you wait until morning to cancel school in instances where the weather is terrible and not predicted to improve by morning? It would help parents who could use the additional time to make alternate childcare arrangements.

Answer:
Northeast Ohio forecasts change abruptly, which makes the determination to cancel classes very difficult at times. We believe it’s best to wait until the start of the day to make the final decision, so that we avoid closing schools prematurely. The last thing we would want to do is call school early and then see the weather dramatically improve overnight.
