Question:
I understand other Elementary schools in the Chardon School District offer an everyday latchkey program. I also understand it is rare for an elementary school to NOT offer such a program. Is Munson Elementary planning to offer an everyday latchkey program in the 2013-2014 school year?
Answer: The ability to host a latchkey program is largely an issue of having the available space for the before and after school program. Since Munson is our largest elmentary school it has many groups vying for use of its one large space, the all-purpose room (APR). While there are no plans to initiate a latchkey program for the 2013-14 school year, the principal says the decision to host one may be revisted in the future.

Question or Comment:
I am concerned that I can no longer access my children's assignment and grade history via Teacherease. Are there plans to create a new and efficient (like Teacherease) means for parents to stay involved on a daily basis? Answer:
This year Chardon Local Schools is using a new data management system called Infinite Campus. In years past the district has relied on multiple systems to manage student information. These systems were cumbersome and limited the collaboration and communication between school officials, teachers and parents. Rather than continue to maintain multiple database systems, our district and nearly every other district in Northeast Ohio chose to move our pertinent student information to Infinite Campus. One of the best features of Infinite Campus is the Parent Portal. This feature allows parents access to their children’s grades, behavior logs and allows two-way communication with teachers. Since Infinite Campus is new to all of us, students, parents and staff alike, the Parent Portal has not yet been activated. When implementing any new program, whether digital or physical, there is a learning curve. As a district, we want our teachers to be comfortable with Infinite Campus and its features in a closed environment. The teacher professional development days held August 21 and 22 were dedicated to this training. As the school year progresses teachers will receive additional training in the Infinite Campus software. Training is being led by our district building technology coordinators with support from LGCA. As such, the estimated timeline for opening the Parent Portal (Grades 4-12) will be the week of September 17th, in time to view your student's interim grades. This is necessary to ensure the accuracy of the data being uploaded to the Parent Portal. If you are a parent of a student in grades 4-12, this means you will not have real-time access to grades through TeacherEase this year. We will be sending more information regarding the Parent Portal in the coming months, including resources to help you navigate your child’s information.
We appreciate your patience as we adapt to this new system and streamline our ability to communicate quickly and efficiently with parents and students.

Question or Comment: I know that both Hambden and Maple are offering latchkey this year- I would LOVE to see this program come to Park. Any chance this is in the works for the 2013-2014 school year?
Answer: Park School shares its large group spaces (CAF/AUD) with the high school drama program so space is extremely limited to house an everday latchkey program.

Question or Comment: How will the waiver being filed by the State of Ohio in February, 2012, to the No Child Left Behind affect the Chardon Schools?
Answer: Ohio’s Waiver request to the U.S. Department of Education focuses on four areas: -A redesign of the accountability (testing) system -Consolidation of plans for and use of certain federal dollars -More flexibility for low-performing schools to improve student achievement, and -Greater district control over spending on tutoring for disadvantaged students.
To make those changes, Ohio will need to provide a plan to focus on “college and career” readiness and to improve how teachers and principals are evaluated. Ohio is already moving in that direction by piloting a new teacher evaluation system in many school districts this year. Our priority, as always, is to boost student performance levels, and we believe the waiver will provide Chardon Schools greater flexibility in how we obtain our results.

Question or Comment: Why do you wait until morning to cancel school in instances where the weather is terrible and not predicted to improve by morning? It would help parents who could use the additional time to make alternate childcare arrangements.
Answer: Northeast Ohio forecasts change abruptly, which makes the determination to cancel classes very difficult at times. We believe it’s best to wait until the start of the day to make the final decision, so that we avoid closing schools prematurely. The last thing we would want to do is call school early and then see the weather dramatically improve overnight.
