April 11, 2025 (CHARDON, OH) — Chardon High School English Language Arts Teacher Holly Mihalek has been nominated for the part-time faculty Excellence in Teaching award at Lakeland Community College.

Mrs. Mihalek, who teaches College Credit Plus courses such as Composition I, Composition II and Journalism 100, has earned praise for her high but attainable expectations for students.

In a petition submitted to nominate Mrs. Mihalek for this honor, she is praised for her efforts to reach all types of learners and enliven lessons, as well as her ability to engage students in the learning process and encourage critical thinking — all while showing enthusiasm and passion for teaching and working with students.

As evidence of this passion for teaching, the nominating form points to her newly created CCP course, Journalism 100: Intro to Mass Media.

“She has spent countless hours researching and creating the course. Each day Mrs. Mihalek brings in new ideas to help students understand how media has, and continues to, shape our society,” the form said.

Mrs. Mihalek’s colleague, Mrs. Cindy Newman, described the important role the nominee plays in Chardon Schools.

“As someone who has worked with Mrs. Mihalek for 13 years, I can confidently say she is one of the most treasured members of our department and school,” Mrs. Newman said.

The 2025 Excellence in Teaching Awards will be presented at Lakeland’s Service Awards on April 16.

Congratulations to Mrs. Mihalek on this well-deserved and exciting nomination!
