Two-School Biographical Fiction Assignment

collage of action and still photos: faculty and students on Oct. 6 in Park Auditorium for the Biographical Fiction Story unveiling

October 7, 2022 — Chardon High School English I Honors students and Park Elementary first-grade students embarked on a collaborative biographical fiction assignment last month wherein each of the CHS students interviewed a young Hilltopper, gathering basic biographical information, including favorites and hobbies, with the goal of writing a fictional story that creatively incorporates their assigned first-grade student.

The unique experience provided first-grade students with an opportunity to learn first-hand what an interview is and practice their listening and speaking skills.

In the weeks that followed after that initial interview, the CHS students were busy writing, illustrating, and assembling their stories.

The classes were reunited for a big unveiling in Park Auditorium on Oct. 6. CHS students introduced the completed stories to their assigned first-grade pals, first reading the books to them and then gifting them with the books to take home as their own.

The English I Honors classes are taught by Mrs. Joanne DeShetler who has organized and led this two-school project as an annual event for many years. Park Elementary first-grade teachers are Mrs. Katie Tyson, Mrs. Rebecca Klembara and Mrs. Robyn Lannon.

Mrs. Tyson stated, “Mrs. DeShetler and her students — some of whom I’ve had the honor of teaching — made our first-graders feel so special. The kids were over-the-moon excited to receive a book starring them as the main character. Thank you for all of your hard work.”
