November 1, 2022 — The Chardon Fire Department and Munson Fire Department donated their time to visit elementary school classrooms throughout the month of October — National Fire Prevention Month — to share their expertise via teaching and building upon previous Hilltopper student learning regarding fire prevention and safety.

Lessons included “Stop Drop and Roll”, “Close Before You Doze”, and “Get Out and Stay Out”. Students learned from CFD and MFD chiefs, inspectors and crew in the classroom and also through touring the fire trucks parked in the school parking lots.

Chardon Early Learning Center Kindergarten teacher Mrs. Maheu stated: "In a classroom demonstration, Chardon Fire Department Lt. Brian Davidson showed Kindergarten students a thermal imaging camera while another Chardon Fire firefighter was standing across the room. The kids were watching the other firefighter appear on Lt. Davidson's camera, seeing how body heat from a person is visible on the camera screen. This demonstration taught students that not only can firefighters use equipment to guide them in locating people in dense smoke but that also they themselves can assist by calling out and waving their arms in a fire, helping firefighters more easily find them through the camera."
