Original Information:

Dear Parents and Students:

Chardon Local Schools is committed to continuing to give students opportunities to challenge themselves and their learning.  To this end, we will be offering a summer learning opportunity for students to voluntarily complete a hybrid (both online and in-person) course, with a “final exam” taken the last week of July.  Students who successfully pass the test will be placed in the next level math course for the 21-22 academic year.

The optional math summer acceleration program is designed for:

  • Any 5th graders who are not placed in the 6th grade accelerated class

  • Any 6th graders who are not placed in the 7th grade accelerated class

  • 6th graders in the single accelerated class seeking to move to double accelerated

  • Any 7th graders who are not placed into Algebra 1 in 8th grade

  • Any 6th or 7th grader who is newly identified as gifted

Students (and parents) currently enrolled in 5th, 6th, or 7th grade are encouraged to consider their assigned math placement for the next school year.  Parents and students should have reviewed their course placements for the next school year as outlined in a message over spring break.  (Reminder - this should be reviewed and corrections submitted by Monday, 4/12.)

The optional math acceleration program will consist of the following:

  • Wednesday, April 14; 6pm.  Virtual informational meeting & registration information.

  • Thursday, April 14 @ 3:15pm.  Required pre-test in LGIR - must be taken in-person

    • If a student passes the pretest they will not be required, though still strongly encouraged, to participate in the summer learning experience.

    • A student must be registered in order to have an account prepared to take the pre-test.

      • registration information to be shared at the informational meeting

  • Monday, April 19 - program begins with a combination of hybrid and in-person (after school) learning (detailed calendar to be shared at information meeting)

  • Week of July 19 - students should be available to meet in-person to complete the post-test.  Passing the post-test is required for those that have not met the other published placement criteria.

We have been offering this program for three years and have seen great success for those students who complete the program.  It is a lot of work, but we are starting earlier than we ever have in order to encourage students to complete the program and be prepared for the next step.

We look forward to meeting with you on April 14 to give you more details about this opportunity for our students!
