Parent Update, 4/19/2021

4th Grade Pick-Up

Please remember that pick-up near the Board of Education is for 4th grade students ONLY.  There are a growing number of cars in this area, minimizing appropriate spots for parents to park, and interfering with bus dismissal.  We need parents’ help to ensure only our youngest students are picked up in this area, with all other students being picked up in the back of the building.

Also, at no time should students be walking across the main parking lot nor in front of busses.  All pick-ups are to be in the upper board office lot with parents meeting their children at the sidewalk if you are not in one of the sidewalk parking spots.

Finally, to those picking up 4th-grade students, please notice the updated traffic pattern with the entrance closest to the Board Office being blocked off creating a one-way traffic pattern to the northern-most driveway.  Also please remember to never enter the line of busses.

Dress Code Reminders

The entire dress code can be found HERE, but we need parents’ help in reinforcing a few expectations to help students be “school ready.”

  • Bare midriffs, halter tops, strapless tops, mesh shirts, tops with “spaghetti straps,” muscle shirts, tank tops and transparent shirts are not permitted.

    • Please note, “high-waist pants” do not allow for bare midriffs to be worn - shirts need to extend beyond the waist.

  • Shorts should be midthigh.  Generally, to help guide this, we tell students that shorts should extend beyond their palm when arms are straight down at their sides.

Masks

Please remember that Governor’s orders require the use of facemasks that cover the face from the nose to the chin.  As students have grown and worn their masks all year, many are becoming stretched out or simply too small.  Please check your child’s masks to ensure proper fit.  Also, all students are asked to carry extra masks in their bookbags to change as needed throughout the day.

Career Week Guest Speakers Needed!

We are looking for parent volunteers or community members who are willing to share their career choices with students in grades 4-7. Guest speakers will be asked to record your work experience for students to be shared with them the week of May 17.  We will provide sample questions for you to answer, but topics will include: related school subjects, education/training, personal skills, a typical day, child-friendly games and presentations, visuals, tour etc. If you or someone you know is willing to share your experience with our students, please click HERE by Wednesday, 4/28.  We will then send more details about how to share your message.  Questions should be directed to school counselor [email protected].

Ohio State Testing (AIR Tests)

Federal law continues to require annual testing for all students grades 3-8, and once in science in grades 3-5 (in Ohio we test science in 5th grade).  In addition, the State of Ohio has directed that there is no option to remotely administer state tests.

Given the information above, ALL CMS STUDENTS (100% virtual “blue” model AND in-person) should plan to report IN-PERSON to CMS on the following dates:

  • Wednesday / Thursday, 4/28 & 4/29:  MS ELA AIR Testing

  • Wednesday / Thursday, 5/5 & 5/6:  MS 5th Grade SCIENCE AIR Testing

  • Wednesday / Thursday, 5/12 & 5/13:  MS MATH AIR Testing

Testing will be from 8:00am - 10:00am.

  • The twenty-two 4th-grade students will be in a classroom rated for 35 with social distancing

  • The fifty 5th-grade students will be in the cafeteria which is rated for 80 with social distancing

  • The seventy-three 6th- and 7th-grade students will be in the LGIR rated for 90 with social distancing.

Virtual parents are asked to CLICK HERE to provide additional information so we can coordinate logistics for these testing days.

Any questions should be directed to [email protected]

MAP Reports & Summer Learning

This week MAP reports from our March testing dates will be sent home with students.  (virtual families - they are available for pick-up in the main office or will be given to students when they arrive for state testing).

Stapled to each MAP report is a letter identifying if your child is being referred to the CMS summer extended learning program.  This program is funded through federal dollars as a response to the Coronavirus pandemic.  Generally, if a student did not meet the average growth from winter 2019 to spring 2021, or if their achievement is below the norm, they have been recommended to participate in this program.  More information will be sent out later this week along with a virtual enrollment form.  Questions regarding a child’s referral should first be directed to the student’s Math or ELA teacher.

*** please note this is separate from the math acceleration summer program ***

The second data point used to guide referral to this extended learning program is the State AIR tests.  Results of these tests are typically received in the building in early June.  If a student is on the list for the program but excels on these assessments, we will communicate this with those individual families.
