District and GCPL Partnering for Makerspace
logos

March 19, 2023 — The Geauga County Public Library has been awarded a grant to fund a makerspace, which in partnership with the Chardon Local Schools, they will be hosting at Chardon High School. Our students and staff (grades PK-12) will have access to the equipment and space during the school day, and the GCPL will staff the makerspace for community use after school hours.

The makerspace will consist primarily of additive "making" equipment (eg. vinyl printer, UV printer, direct-to-garment printer, 3D scanner, broadcasting equipment/cart, 3D printer); there will also be subtractive "making" equipment (eg. CNC, laser cutter, etc.). While the specific logistics are still being finalized, we are beginning the process of identifying necessary room and facility upgrades. The District's is goal to have this phase completed by August 2023.

Additionally, a committee of teachers is beginning work on revising and writing courses of study for STEM, computer science, and engineering courses that will align across grade levels.

The complete implementation of this physical space will span several years and entail the accumulation of equipment, training of staff, and alignment of courses.
