February 21, 2023 — Chardon Academic Decathlon is no stranger to high achievement, including advancement to state-level competition, and this year builds on that rich history with stellar performance in the current season propelling the 2022-23 team to the State tournament at John Carroll University March 10-11.

This year's team, which comprises 22 students in grade levels 9-12, excelled in virtual regional contests throughout January and February, garnering 26 medals, including 10 gold! [full list of team members below]

Chardon ACADEC is coached by the highly credentialed Mr. Herner — a CHS English Language Arts teacher, College Credit Plus business instructor, Circuit of Success facilitator, Freshman Mentoring advisor, and Technology Coordinator.

Offered at CHS as a humanities course, ACADEC studies a different scholastic curricular theme annually as identified by the United States Academic Decathlon organization. The 2022-23 theme is "The American Revolution and the New Nation" with concentrated elements of study in the areas of social science, economics, science, language arts, music, art and mathematics.

Like with any multi-faceted program, it takes a village.

Coach Herner stated, "We get help from all of our high school's departments and are grateful for that teamwork. Our regional results revealed a particular standout category this year, as is often the case. Owing to the excellent math instruction at CHS, Chardon came away with 5 math medals, representing a full 20-percent of the team's total medal haul. Students took individual bronze and silver medals and swept the gold medal category in the large school division, picking up all 3 gold."

Congrats Chardon ACADEC & Best Wishes at States!
