Dear Hilltopper Families,

At the June 19, 2023 regular board meeting, the Chardon Board of Education approved the elimination of Chardon Schools extracurricular activity “Pay to Participate” fees — both athletic and non-athletic — for Chardon High School and Chardon Middle School students for the 2023-24 school year. Examples include sports programs, choir, drama, band, etc.

Exception: Chardon Middle School drama fees will remain the responsibility of parents/guardians as those services are provided by an outside source — Geauga Theater.

For K-12, the District has eliminated supply fees, planner fees, lock fees, and workbook fees for the 2023-24 school year.

Further details added 7/1/23:

Will there be a refund for fees already paid for the 2023-24 school year?

As District fees for 2023-24 have not been loaded into Infinite Campus as of the time of this writing, there would not be any 2023-24 District fees a parent/guardian has already paid to Chardon Schools. With that said, various clubs and activities have fees to offset expenses for that activity, but those are not District Pay to Participate fees. For athletic and non-athletic extracurricular activities, only District Pay to Participate fees have been eliminated.

How was the District able to make this elimination of Pay to Participate fees possible?

The elimination of school fees has been a District goal. Fees were greatly reduced in the 22-23 school year as phase 1 of this goal. Now, eliminating District "Pay to Participate" student activity/athletic fees has been achieved by planning and budgeting District funds to allow for this benefit to all students.

Which District fees will be in effect for parents/guardians to pay for the 2023-24 school year?

The following three documents list District fees that are upcoming for the 2023-24 school year. These documents are for parent/guardian pre-notification purposes only. The fees have not, at the time of this writing, been loaded into Infinite Campus for parents/guardians to pay but will be added to the IC parent portal later this summer.

NOTE:  Regarding the fees listed in the above pdfs — the only fees that will be added at the beginning of the year (later this summer) are the Chromebook fees for middle school and high school.  All other fees will be added to Infinite Campus as they apply throughout the school year. Example:  The English Class Visiting Actors fee will be added once a student is in the class and accepted the in-house field trip.

How do I pay my unpaid fees from previous school years?

If your student has any unpaid fees from previous years, they can be conveniently paid through Infinite Campus.

Can my student participate in athletics in 2023-24 if I have unpaid sports participation fees from previous years?
Please note that student-athletes with unpaid sports participation fees from the 2022-23 year or prior MAY NOT COMPETE IN CONTESTS for a 2023-24 sport UNTIL BOTH of the following are completed:

  1. FULL PAYMENT IS MADE FOR THE STUDENT-ATHLETE'S MOST RECENT UNPAID SPORTS FEE
    AND
  2. A $50 PAYMENT IS MADE TOWARD ANY UNPAID SPORTS PARTICIPATION FEE PRIOR TO THE MOST RECENT UNPAID SPORT FEE.
Please contact the CHS Athletic Director Doug Snyder [email protected] with any questions pertaining to unpaid sports participation fees.
