October 11, 2023 — Chardon Middle School seventh-grade teachers were pleased to once again host the Chardon High School Varsity Baseball Team for a second, annual installment of Baseball Day. This annual, all-day event, held this year on Sept. 21, integrates the real-life application of mathematics, as well as mentorship and exercise.

Ms. Steinmetz stated, "Each year, Baseball Day concludes our baseball unit where students have used math to create baseball teams. Prior to this event, seventh-graders were randomly given 12 baseball players and then researched those players stats. They then combined their players with two other classmates to create the best team of 9 players and then 10 by 10 grids, one for each player, using the players stats. Students used number generators to simulate games and played each others' teams. Throughout this assignment, students used their knowledge of fractions, decimals, percentages, rounding, estimating, analyzing data and probability to bring this whole project together. Mrs. Curitore and I are really proud of how it came together and the work the students did."

Interactive Presentation — Math Concepts & Character
The initial interactive learning segment of Baseball Day 2023 comprised a one-hour presentation by Coach Long and the attending student athletes. Seventh-grade students learned how their newly acquired math skills — working with ratios, stats, probability and applied analytics — have real-life application in a baseball team's strategy for success.

In addition to gaining insight on how math has a prominent place on the baseball diamond, seventh-grade students also learned character traits of Chardon Baseball athletes.

Coach Long highlighted the importance of academics being the top priority stating that he reminds students that sports participation is considered secondary to student achievement in the classroom. Good behavior was also emphasized by Coach Long as a key character trait for student athletes.

Wiffle Ball, Movie, & Stadium Snacks
Following the interactive presentation, Chardon Baseball athletes and seventh-grade students headed outdoors for camaraderie via breakout games of Wiffle ball on the grounds adjacent to Memorial Field.

As an additional hands-on learning opportunity, several of Nikki Diehm's Media Productions students seized the opportunity to set up their video recording equipment and capture the action of the Wiffle ball games, providing the digital learning Hilltoppers with real-life experience.

CMS Baseball Day continued in the afternoon with students having the opportunity to watch a movie (Sandlot), and enjoy a CMS PTO-provided snack of ballpark hot dogs and popcorn.

Principal's Note of Appreciation
Principal Adam Tomco stated, "I celebrate the creativity and dedication of our teachers for creating this learning experience. Baseball Day is one of my favorite activities of the school year. Thank you to Coach Long, members of the CHS baseball team, and our PTO for their support."
