Power of the Pen District Successes
7 Hilltoppers Advancing to Regional Competition

March 1, 2024 (CHARDON, OH) — Chardon Middle School Power of the Pen club, advised by faculty member Shannon Monsman, was proud to have 10 student writers participating in the Power of the Pen Lake Erie Region I District Tournament held at Lake Erie College on Feb. 24. Both team and individual placements were achieved for Chardon.

The Power of the Pen Lake Erie Region division comprises schools from Geauga, Ashtabula, Lake, southeastern Cuyahoga and northern Summit counties. The Lake Erie Region I District event hosted 175 students from 20 schools, of which 81 were eighth-graders and 94 were seventh-graders.

8th Grade Individual
  • Audrey Adair - Placed 3rd
    + Earned a Best of Round Award for her story "The Most Embarrassing Lunch Ever"
7th Grade Team - Placed 5th Overall
  • Maddox Monsman

  • Eli Wise
  • Adrianna Yaney
7th Grade Individual
  • Eli Wise - Placed 7th
  • Beatrice Snyder - Placed 6th
    + Earned the Director's Choice Award for her story "The Tiniest Heart"
  • Adrianna Yaney - Placed 3rd
Coach Monsman stated, "We're proud of all 10 Chardon writers who competed at the District level. Four seventh-graders and three eighth-graders have qualified to advance to the Lake Erie regional tournament on March 9 at Shaker Heights Middle School."

CMS' Power of the Pen club, offered to grade levels 5-8, is dedicated to helping young people find and develop a creative voice that is uniquely their own. Students are challenged to embrace the art of creative expression through writing as a life skill.
