Important District Safety and Security Enhancements
We Believe Safe and Secure Environments are Critical for All Stakeholders

March 22, 2024 (CHARDON, OH) — Chardon Schools has undertaken a number of new safety and security initiatives, which align with the District's Success Plan 2028.

Superintendent Mike Hanlon stated, "The District is committed to a multi-layered approach to our number one priority — the safety, security and wellness of students and staff."

Funding for these initiatives is from the Ohio K-12 School Safety Grants (2) awarded to Chardon Schools in 2022-23. The two grants, combined, amount to approximately $499,000.

The grant program, launched by Governor DeWine in 2021, is administered by the Ohio Facilities Construction Commission in partnership with the Ohio School Safety Center.

Chardon Schools' Completed Initiatives:

1. BUILDING ENHANCEMENTS

Building safety and security upgrades, including:

  • New door locks in all buildings
  • New windows
  • Upgraded fire system boxes
  • Vape detectors
  • Elevator repairs
  • Multiple layers of security installed in a security vestibule at Chardon Middle School*

Hanlon stated, "These enhancements increase the available time for critical communications with local law enforcement.

*The same security vestibule entry systems are planned for Chardon High School and all elementary buildings.

2. CAMERA SURVEILLANCE
Following an assessment of the District’s existing surveillance system, each building is now equipped with:

  • Additional cameras
  • Advanced features related to technology, analytics and detection
Hanlon added, "This includes weapons detection technology being recently installed and now fully operating in all school campuses. The latest surveillance upgrades enhance our monitoring system and support critical response time of law enforcement."

3. ON-CAMPUS SERVICES
Of critical importance in the layered approach to safety and security is SRO Jasen Elam and the increased law enforcement presence on Chardon Schools campuses since last spring.

Hanlon stated, "Our partnerships with Chardon Police and the Geauga County Sheriff’s Office are strong and invaluable. The impact of officers building positive relationships with students and staff is immeasurable."

Furthermore, the hiring of Mr. Tony Madden, at the start of this school year, for the high school campus has provided yet another important layer of security.

Hanlon added, "Mr. Madden serves as a parking lot attendant and provides campus security and is highly regarded by our students and staff."
