Tomorrow Starts Here

Principal's Message

I am excited for the 2017-2018 school year at Hambden Elementary. This will be my 4th school year at Chardon. As principal, my goal is to create a safe and inviting learning environment for all students. I am looking forward to continuing to build relationships with our students, staff and families. We have many great new learning opportunities at Hambden. I have an open door policy so feel free to stop and meet with me anytime.

This year, we continue to be fully engaged in the Common Core Standards which require our students to apply what they have learned to solving critical thinking problems. Our anti-bullying program will promote the theme of “Unexpected Friendships are the best Ones”. Our students voted on this theme last school year. Classrooms in grades 3,4 and 5 have been fully upgraded to more student friendly blended learning environments. This gives students the opportunities for more 1-1 time with the teacher, and more student led learning, all while promoting movement in the classroom. Our classrooms in grades K,1 and 2 have been upgraded and are moving forward this year towards more blended learning environments as well. Also, with the acquisition of a new touch screen Chromebook cart, our students in grades K-2 have access to online material any time during the day.

This year for our Tech classes, will continue a STEM model to teach our technology standards. Our goal is not to teach students how to use computers, instead it is to encourage innovation and problem solving using technology. We will accomplish this through a station-rotation concept where students will be given different opportunities and challenges each time they visit the “STEM-Lab” class. These challenges will include robotics, programming, laser engineering, 3-D printing, engineering using Lego We-Do, coding and many more.

Chardon's mission statement:
The mission of the Chardon Local Schools is high achievement for all students, where learning is our most important work.
This year our theme this year is “Unexpected Friendships are the Best Ones" Please join me on the journey this year and make this the most successful year yet at Hambden Elementary!
